The reason <em>why<\/em> he wanted to sink his business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The problem, as he saw it, was that this simple code was open source &#8211;\n that is, it had already been made available to developers at no cost &#8211; \nso Peter [Reinhardt] could not see how it could bring money in.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, this guy didn&#8217;t know a lot about open source. While it&#8217;s \ntrue that companies that have used open source software as their main \nproduct have come and gone, there are a few who made it work. One was <a href=\"file:\/\/\/tmp\/www.redhat.com\">Red Hat<\/a>, with their GNU\/Linux OS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). The reason why they succeeded? They became <em>the<\/em>\n best source of anything RHEL. Need it installed on a bunch of servers \neasily? Done. Do you require fixes quickly? They can handle that. Have a\n taste for all of that containerization stuff you&#8217;ve heard about? Red \nHat has you covered. How about technologies which add to and improve \nRHEL? Red Hat has that in spades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s mainly what a company with an open source product needs to do:\n become the best firm for that piece of open source software. Deliver \nthe best service, the best features, and the best support for that \nsoftware. And if that didn&#8217;t convince you, then maybe the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2018\/10\/ibm-buys-red-hat-with-eye-on-cloud-dominance\/\">$34 billion purchase of Red Hat by IBM<\/a> may persuade you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was reading a BBC article months ago about a guy who tried to sink his business.
